Fashion moves fast, and shake-ups in the industry happen in the blink of an eye. On Thursday, Gucci announced the departure of creative director Sabato De Sarno, just over a year after he took the reins. The news came as a surprise, as De Sarno had been reshaping the brand’s identity with a refined, classic aesthetic.
His final collection for Gucci will debut on February 25 during Milan Fashion Week. However, the show will be led by the brand’s in-house design team, while the industry is already speculating about who will take over next.
A Short but Significant Chapter

De Sarno stepped into the role in January 2023 following the departure of Alessandro Michele, whose maximalist, romantic vision had defined Gucci for nearly a decade. His challenge was clear: to refresh the brand’s image while staying true to its heritage.
In just a year, De Sarno introduced a more understated yet sophisticated aesthetic, highlighting timeless pieces and the craftsmanship at the core of Gucci. His approach struck a balance between modernity and tradition, attracting a fresh audience to the brand.
Despite his impact, his tenure is ending sooner than expected. Gucci’s CEO, Stefano Cantino, publicly thanked De Sarno for his “passion and dedication,” while Francesca Bellettini, vice-CEO of Kering, acknowledged his role in strengthening the brand’s foundations for the future.

Who’s Next?
With De Sarno’s exit, the fashion world is already buzzing with speculation about his successor. One name, in particular, has caught attention—John Galliano. The designer was recently spotted strolling through Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, a historic landmark for Italian fashion.
Currently at the helm of Maison Margiela, Galliano has been showcasing his signature theatrical and avant-garde vision. His name has surfaced in past rumors regarding Gucci, and his presence in Milan at this moment has only fueled speculation.
What’s Next for Gucci?
As the brand navigates this transition, one thing is certain: Gucci remains one of the most influential names in fashion. Whether Galliano or another unexpected visionary steps in, a new creative chapter is about to unfold.
The February show will be the last glimpse of Gucci through De Sarno’s lens—and perhaps a hint at what’s to come. After all, fashion is all about reinvention.
