1. Luz, you’ve built a successful career as a businesswoman with two companies in Portugal and an inn in Brazil. What were the biggest challenges you faced in running businesses in two different countries, and how did your faith help you overcome them?
The biggest challenges I faced in doing business in Portugal and Brazil were undoubtedly the cultural differences and the nuances of local markets. Each country has its own rules, expectations, and ways of conducting business. Additionally, the legal and bureaucratic aspects can be quite a maze. My faith was fundamental during this time. It provided me with resilience and a broader perspective, allowing me to view challenges as opportunities for learning and growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. Prayer and reflection helped me maintain calm and clarity, even in the most difficult situations.
2. As a successful businesswoman and a mentor to other entrepreneurs, how do you view the balance between efficient management and upholding personal and spiritual values in business?
I believe it is both possible and essential to balance efficient management with the maintenance of personal and spiritual values. For me, ethics and integrity are fundamental pillars that uphold any long-lasting business. When leaders align with their values, they create an organizational culture that inspires trust and loyalty among employees and clients. This harmony not only boosts productivity but also fosters an environment where people feel valued and motivated to contribute.
As a mentor, I always encourage other entrepreneurs to focus not only on profit but also on the impact of their actions on society.
3. When dealing with challenging moments, such as burnout and recovering from surgery, how did you manage to keep your businesses running and continue growing as a leader?
Burnout was a significant challenge in my life. During my recovery, I realized the importance of delegating tasks and trusting those around me. I built a strong and capable team that not only understands the business vision but is also willing to take on responsibilities during critical moments. Additionally, I set healthy boundaries for my working hours and sought emotional and spiritual support. This experience taught me that taking care of oneself is essential to leading effectively.
4. Creating your devotional was a very personal project. How does it connect with your business side? Do you feel that this spiritual work has brought new insights into the way you manage your companies?
Creating my devotional was a way to unite my spirituality with my professional life. This project allowed me to reflect on the principles that guide both my life and business. Through the devotional, I learned to value empathy, gratitude, and generosity, which are values I strive to incorporate into my daily business practices. These insights have helped me create a more welcoming and human-centered work environment, where people feel comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns.
5. Your entrepreneurial journey began amidst adversity. What do you believe was the main factor that contributed to your rise in the business world, going from a humble family background to becoming an international businesswoman?
The main factor was determination and a desire to learn. From an early age, I sought opportunities for growth and development. I believe adversity shaped my character and taught me to appreciate every achievement. Additionally, my ability to adapt and persist in the face of challenges helped me overcome barriers. I'm always in search of knowledge and networking, which allowed me to build a support network that was essential for my success.
6. In a competitive market, especially abroad, what strategies or principles do you consider essential to maintain the success and longevity of your companies?
To ensure the success and longevity of businesses in a competitive market, a few strategies are essential. First, continuous innovation is vital; we need to stay alert to market changes and ready to adapt our products and services. Additionally, cultivating strong relationships with clients and partners is crucial. Transparency and open communication help build trust.
Finally, investing in people—whether through training, recognition, or well-being—is fundamental, as a motivated and well-prepared team is the foundation for any successful business.
