The Met Gala, always a defining moment for global fashion trends, will take on a new level of cultural significance in 2025 with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This event is set to celebrate the aesthetic and political contributions of Black dandyism, delving into its origins, evolution, and lasting impact on the African diaspora’s identity.

With Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky as co-hosts, the Gala promises to be an unforgettable evening, led by these fashion and cultural icons. Each of them has, in their own way, shaped the global fashion landscape. Pharrell, especially as Louis Vuitton’s creative director, has broken boundaries in men’s fashion, while Lewis Hamilton and A$AP Rocky represent the fusion of style and attitude, redefining masculine fashion norms.

Curated by the renowned professor Monica Miller and inspired by her book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition will shine a light on the history of Black dandyism. From its roots in the 18th century to the present day, Black dandyism emerged as a response to the impositions of fashion on Black men, transforming clothing into a tool of resistance and social reinvention.

This marks the first exhibition exclusively focused on men’s fashion since 2003, adding extra relevance to the occasion. The 2025 Met Gala is set to write a new chapter in fashion history, celebrating the power, aesthetics, and resilience of Black dandies, a narrative that resonates far beyond the runway.

With Anna Wintour and LeBron James also leading the organizing efforts, this year’s Gala is bound to be a cultural and aesthetic milestone, honoring not only style but the complex layers of Black identity in fashion.
