In the heart of Paris, Nicolas di Felice, the artistic director of Courrèges, presented his highly anticipated Haute Couture collection as the latest guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier. Taking over from Simone Rocha, di Felice brought a fresh and dynamic energy to the iconic brand, showcasing a collection that fused innovation with a deep respect for Gaultier’s legacy.

Despite being relatively new to the haute couture scene—his debut at Courrèges coinciding with the inception of Gaultier’s guest designer series in 2021—di Felice’s presentation was anything but novice. The setting of JPG's headquarters was stiflingly hot, almost like a greenhouse under the Parisian skylights, but this did nothing to dim the brilliance of the collection.

Di Felice has been instrumental in reviving Courrèges, transforming it from a dormant heritage brand into a vibrant label sought after by the youth for its edgy club wear and stylish vinyl pieces. His approach has always been to honor the Space Age origins of Courrèges while pushing it firmly into the future.

Reflecting on his influences, di Felice recalled the impact of Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic designs from his youth in Belgium, particularly Madonna's infamous cone bra. “For many of us, especially those who felt different or were part of the queer community, Gaultier symbolized Paris as a place of endless possibilities,” he remarked. “He was a pioneer in celebrating diversity, and that has always stayed with me.”

The collection itself was a testament to di Felice’s ability to blend past and present. It featured striking silhouettes and innovative fabric combinations, paying homage to Gaultier’s bold aesthetic while infusing it with his own contemporary twist. The pieces on display were not just garments but statements, each telling a story of transformation and modernity.
